    SOIL PHYSIOGRAPHY TOP

The area is generally volcanic hills with slightly to moderately dissected slopes on the north and northwest portions, while the southern portion is generally alluvial plain.

The built-up area is mostly of broad alluvial plains. The coastal fronts of barangays Cogon, Dawis, Sinawilan and Aplaya and at the mouth of Digos river are covered with active tidal mud and sandy soil formed into beach ridges. Soil Physiography is shown in Map No. 6.

    HYDRO-GEOLOGY TOP

The poblacion area and the adjacent barangays like San Miguel, San Jose, Igpit, Dawis, Tres de Mayo and Aplaya are identified having good sources of potable ground water.

Other inland barangays, like Matti, Colorado, Dulangan, Cogon, Ruparan, Kiagot, Tiguman and Sinawilan have rocky underground features making construction of a well difficult and costly.

Ground characteristic in other upland barangays, like Mahayahay, Balabag, Soong, Goma, Kapatagan, and San Agustin are predominantly rocky and water level is generally deep.

On the other hand, Lungag is the only barangay which has no water source of any kind. (Please refer to Map No. 7)

    FLOODING HAZARD AREA TOP

Environmental factors such as soil type, slope, rainfall intensity are considered in the identification of the flooding hazard in the locality. The flooding hazard areas in the locality are categorized into moderate flooding hazard and severe flooding hazard (Please refer to Map No. 8).

    LAND CLASSIFICATION TOP

Land area in Digos falls under two classifications, namely : alienable and disposable and that which is declared as natural park.

Of the total land area, 41.64% are classified as alienable and disposable while 58.36% fall within the reserved Mt. Apo Natural Park. (Please refer to Table No. 3b ).

Factors considered in the identification of Land Capability Classes are soil erosion, potential flooding and soil condition. (for illustration please refer to Map No. 9)

LAND CAPABILITY FOR CULTIVATION (Class A, B & C) TOP

The area around the poblacion and urban barangays with generally flat terrain are considered suitable for crops. The40 moderately sloped area in Binaton, Soong, Goma and Balabag are suited for agri-forestry while the very steep lands are favorable for forest. (Refer to Map No. 9 and Table No. 3c).

LAND LIMITED TO FOREST (Class D & M)
    TOP

These are located in some upland barangays and in areas covered by the Mt. Apo Natural Park.

LAND LIMITED TO FISHPOND/MANGROVES (Class X) TOP

Areas included are part of coastal barangays of Dawis, Aplaya, Cogon and Sinawilan.

    SOIL SUITABILITY STUDIES TOP

Factors such as slope, erosion potential, soil type and drainage are considered in identifying suitable sites for rice paddy, fishpond, diversified crops, fruit trees and built-up area. Map No. 10 classifies land according to soil suitability.

SOIL SUITABILITY FOR URBAN USE TOP

Generally, the poblacion area comprising zones I, II, & III and the adjacent barangays Aplaya, Dawis, Cogon, San Jose, San Miguel and Tres de Mayo is a built up area and is highly populated. It has good ground water and not subject to flooding except to a portion of barangay Aplaya located in a low lying area.

SOIL SUITABILITY FOR RICE CROPS TOP

The barangays located at the southwestern portion of Digos such as Ruparan, San Agustin, Matti and the lower areas of Igpit, Tiguman and Lower Colorado are suitable for rice production. The irrigation system which serves these areas taps from the upstream of Digos river.

SOIL SUITABILITY FOR DIVERSIFIED CROPS TOP

Diversified crops are best suited in the barangays of Sinawilan, Cogon, Kiagot, Tiguman, Igpit, Upper Matti, Upper Colorado, San Roque, Ruparan, Goma, San Agustin, Dulangan and Lungag. Vegetables and root crops are widely grown in Kapatagan and Binaton while sugarcane and bananas thrive well in flat and moderately rolling land.

SOIL SUITABILITY FOR TREE CROPS TOP

Upland barangays like Balabag, Binaton, Dulangan, Goma, Kapatagan, Kiagot, Lungag, Mahayahay and Soong are best suited for tree crops.
