Senator Richard Gordon fanned the spirit of volunteerism and encouraged the youth to embrace patriotism as he toured the Southern Part of Mindanao, over the weekend.
Gordon was in Digos City to join the “Walk for Humanity” that the Philippine National Red Cross-Davao del Sur chapter (PNRC) had initiated early on Saturday.

He also administered the oath taking rites of the officers of the REACT Mt. Apo – a rescue and communications group in Davao del Sur, being the national chairman and chief executive officer of PNRC.

More than a thousand people predominantly teachers, barangay officials, volunteers and students from different schools in Digos City met the senator at the city gym.

Gordon also met officers and members of the “Red Cross 143” – a nationwide program of the PNRC aimed to uphold the tenets of a person ready to exercise the tenets of volunteerism with utmost dedication in the service of the people who are in dire need of helping hands.

“Unfortunately, we are living in a country with scores of disasters and a circle of poverty. We must learn from our experiences from these events and device a plan to cushion its effects the next time it hits us,” Gordon said during his message.

Helen Caberto, PNRC chapter administrator said Gordon’s short visit to the city is a very significant moment for the people behind the success of the local Red Cross, “for it gives us more courage to work harder in the name of public service, knowing that somebody out there also cares for us.”

Gordon, one of the advocates in poll automation in the country, and tested its capabilities in the recent ARMM elections is rumored as seeking a higher elective position in 2010.

Oscar Abajero, PNRC board of directors and chairman of the volunteer groups said Gordon is a person whose leadership and capability to lead is beyond question.

“He is always there to serve the people and the entire humanity,” Abajero said.
