Elements of the provincial anti-illegal drugs – special operations task force (PAID-SOFT) has commenced its crackdown against the proliferation of prohibited drugs in the city and its neighboring towns following reports that a drug ring is reactivating its illicit trade.
Armed with a search warrant, Inspector Robert Caraoa, police provincial intelligence chief led the raid at about 5:30 a.m. of July 14 at the residence of Julius Merca, 36, and his live-in partner Jocelyn Sultan in Barangay Kiagot, Digos City.
Regional Trial Court Branch-20 Judge Albert Axalan issued the search warrant against the ‘couple’ on July 09.
The operatives failed to recover any prohibited drugs inside the house but seized assorted drug paraphernalia such as aluminum foils, lighters, improvised totters, and empty sachets with still undetermined residues and improvised wick.
Merca is a motorized-tricycle-for-hire driver, while Sultan is doing business in the barangay, the police said.
The suspects admitted owning the paraphernalia but denied using prohibited drugs.
“We already ceased using illegal drugs since the police had warned us to stop it,” Jocelyn said in a media interview.
The duo said they just forgot to dispose the confiscated drug paraphernalia that the raiding team recovered inside the house.
Supt. Hubert Abadia, assistant provincial director for operation said the police would push through the filing of charges against the suspects for violation of the Anti-Dangerous Drugs Act, as amended (R.A. 9165).
The police are now conducting surveillance operation on some personalities reported to have been involved into prohibited drugs in the city and other parts of the province
Senior Supt. Cesario Darantinao, Davao del Sur PNP director has disclosed intelligence reports that more or less one-kilo of shabu (Methamphetamine Hydrochloride) is being dropped somewhere in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur and distributed in the neighboring towns including Digos City.
Darantinao vowed to curb the proliferation of prohibited drugs in the province through constant surveillance operation and raids on positively identified drug dens. (With reports from Roger Panogadia)
