The military and the police in Davao del Sur are placed under heightened alert status following the series of NPA attacks in the region.
Major Lyndon Paniza, 39th Infantry Battalion (IB) commander said they could not afford to lose lives of the people from the hands of the communist rebels who are already feeling “desperate” over the lack of financial and mass based-support in areas where they are operating.
Paniza said the military is also trying to meet the marching order from the higher command to cripple the structure of the CPP-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army) in his area of responsibility before the end of the year.
On the other hand, Supt. Cesario Darantinao, Davao del Sur PNP provincial director has ordered all station commanders in 14 municipalities and the police director of Digos City to conduct a 24-hour alert status in their respective jurisdictions to deter rebels from doing actions detrimental to the lives and properties of the people.
“We should always be vigilant at this point in time. The rebels are just waiting for the right time to launch an attack,” Darantinao said.
On June, the NPA rebels attacked several remote villages in the province and disarmed militiamen of their weapons and confiscated firearms from residents of those villages.
The recent encounter in Dungan Pekong, Matanao town inflicted injuries to three Cafgu members belonging to the 72nd IB after a command-detonated landmine and a pressure-detonated landmine place beside the road went off when government troopers went to the area to check on the reported harassment.
Elements of the Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD) also recovered three improvised bombs placed inside the abandoned military camp in Barangay Balutakay, Bansalan town on the same week.
