Bachelor drowned at irrigation channel
Written by Eldie S. Aguirre and Nilo Mercado
Friday, 27 June 2008
A 40 year old bachelor was found dead few kilometers away from the spot of the irrigation channel in Barangay Barayong, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur where he fell on Tuesday evening.

Inspector Peter Calunsag, Magsaysay OIC-police chief said the victim, who was fished out of the ditch, sustained a wound in the forehead from a blunt and hard object.

The police theorized he slipped into the channel where he became unconscious after a still undetermined object hit his forehead.

Calunsag only gave descriptions of the victim but failed to identify his name.

But, Ruelito Escudero who claimed to be the uncle of the victim identified the body to be Janito de la Cruz, a native of Barangay del Carmen, President Roxas, North Cotabato.

Escudero who personally went to the funeral parlor for positive identification said De la Cruz was in a drinking spree in Barayong together with some barangay officials on the night of the incident.

Jun Castillo, a friend of the victim said De la Cruz was already reeking with liquor when he left the place at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Castillo said De la Cruz slipped into the canal head first where he failed to get out and swift by the raging water of the huge channel.

He did not identify the witness to the incident who ‘even tried to save the victim from his ordeal but he did not make it’.

De la Cruz body was retrieved in the morning of Wednesday in Barangay Dalawinon – an adjacent village of Barayong.
